It also offers superb integration with video channel streaming services such as Channels.com giving you access to channels such as ESPN, Reuters and National Geographic. Just right-click or CMD-click on the playlist, select Services Discovery and Channels.com.

Channels.com will then appear in your VLC media player playlist. Click on it to reveal the the different categories of channels available. Click on the category you want and a drop down list of all available channels appears in VLC media player. Just click on the channel you want to watch and streaming should begin almost immediately. VLC media player also has great hotkey support and if you take the time to learn the shortcuts so it can be controlled without touching your mouse.

If you're watching DVDs or video files through it, this is not an issue. For music, it plays more or less any file and features an equalizer and playlist creation. VLC media player isn't as intuitive as iTunes as a media manager, but it's a much more flexible player in terms of file formats.

You can even use VLC to convert your files, and on top of all the formats and physical media it will play, many streaming protocols and TV capture cards are supported. VLC media player makes it easy to add subtitles to your video files too - just add the SRT file to the folder where your video is kept, and it will automatically play with subtitles. Finally, the interface has been somewhat improved in version 2 on Mac.

In fact, the Mac interface is now considerably slicker than on Windows with a single window for everything. However, it's only available in 2 colors: Lion grey and QTX black. There are also new extensions support and better Lion integration. The preferences menu is still comprehensive without being overwhelming, and there is extensive documentation online. I'm always a bit wary of programs that claim to optimize RAM as this is something that can make your system terribly unstable if done badly but you can run Lion Cache Cleaner in Single User Mode to avoid crashing your entire machine in one go. We also liked the fact that you can instantly see the login items on your Mac which can reveal erroneous entries that may be slowing down your startups.

On the downside, Lion Cache Cleaner leaves behind the package receipt and . plist file when uninstalled and the overall interface, while easy to use, is very dated. Despite the confusing name, rest assured that Lion Cache Cleaner works from Panther upwards and is a lightweight, easy to use and effective way to maintain your system.

Transmission is currently the best torrent client on Mac thanks to a beautiful interface and a simple set of intuitive features. You can set different priority levels for torrents and establish stall limit times.

Transmission's speed limit mode, represented by a turtle icon at the bottom of the interface, is extremely useful if you're looking to control the amount of bandwidth you use for uploads and downloads. The option for anonymous connections has been removed in this latest version however. Transmission has consistently improved over time, offering many more options to view your torrents.

You can now filter your torrent list according to downloading, seeding, or paused. The client can also organize transfers by queue order, date added, name, process. Transmission also allows you to label, filter and sort torrents by groups and total activity. You can also encrypt your torrent activity in case you want it to stay private. We really like the new interface, which blends in perfectly to the new Mac OS X Leopard.

Transmission manages to display all the essential information without actually seeming crowded, which is no easy feat. The only little nag we'd have with it is that it doesn't offer as many advanced statistics as you'd find in Vuze. Despite no advanced statistics, Transmission is a beautiful and incredibly intuitive torrent client for Mac.

It's not unusual to see the spinning wheel of death occasionally as Camino processes certain pages. In addition, I kept receiving a strange error message related to the disk image it was being run from which kept popping up.

However, the main drawback, is that unlike Firefox, Camino doesn't offer addons so you can't customize it half as much. If you're really sick of Firefox hogging your memory, then Camino might be for you but for most people used to the extendability and customization of Firefox, it's not exactly up to scratch.

They say a picture paints a thousand words. Screencasts, which are videos of your computer screen and often used in tutorials, are a useful way to illustrate a point or program. ScreenFlow is a very polished screencasting application, which records just about anything and gives you a huge amount of editing options afterwards. ScreenFlow will record everything from your iSight camera to microphone audio or speaker audio enabling you to add crystal clear commentaries to your screencasts.

ScreenFlow even monitors keystrokes and mouse movements, which is pretty clever. The app also has an excellent zoom function which allows you to add a touch of class and professionalism to your screencasts. Recording quality is excellent, and thanks to a high frame-rate (which you can set), your videos look as if everything was actually happening on your screen.

What's also surprising is that ScreenFlow is very lightweight for what is effectively a video editor, consuming relatively few CPU and RAM resources. Exporting is possible in all major formats and YouTube fans can now share their productions instantly. The program has one glaring drawback however and that's that you can't add text, subtitles or simple text annotations to your beautifully produced screencasts.

It's also a bit on the pricey side but if you're looking to produce professional looking screencasts, it's probably worth it. ScreenFlow is an excellent screencasting application that just lacks text insertion support to make it a truly excellent application.

However, this will no doubt prove too complicated for most general users and considering the fact that you have to buy a license too for RAR, there are far better applications out there such as Zipeg which is both free and has a GUI thus making it much easier to use. Yoono is ideal for people who want to be constantly connected and up to date with their social world.
