The reason being is that Thunderbird is regularly updated and crafted by volunteers who's main interest is making a better product rather than profiting from an end-product. Security updates are regular but small so as not to slow-down Thunderbird. Exchange support One of the biggest selling points of Mozilla Thunderbird is, due to the launch of Snow Leopard, that it now offers Microsoft Exchange support, meaning it will appeal to Office users who previously discounted it.

Whats more, Mozilla has finally given Thunderbird a real OS X look and feel rather than just a clone of the Windows version as in previous releases. On the downside, the app is lacking some finesse in certain areas. Thunderbird still doesn't have conversation style email views like in Gmail (although an extension to do this can be downloaded separately) and there aren't many options for managing attachments and photos.

There's also no calendar but again, this can be downloaded separately in the form of "Lightening". Overall, Thunderbird is an excellent free alternative to Microsoft Outlook.

You could pretty much consider FileZilla an open source success story. It's popular, works well and fast, and regularly updated. If you're looking for a solid FTP client what more could you ask more? In fact, FileZilla is not just limited to FTP, but also handles FTPS and SFTP for secure transfers of multiple files on multiple servers.

The interface, if not a little ugly, gives you a quick outlook of all your transfers, sites and disks and makes it easy to drag and transfer. I also quite like the QuickConnect feature to access your favorite server in seconds. FileZilla is known to be fairly fast, and can also resume downloads and handle very big transfers, I'm talking here higher than 4 GB.

You can set both local and remote filters for things like images, explorer files or CVS and SVN directories or even create your own. FileZilla also includes a tool to compare directories in terms of file size or modification time. The application can guide you when setting up your network and lets you set speed limits in case you don't want to overload your bandwidth.

One thing really missing from FileZilla though is a scheduler to automatically set transfer times. Despite lacking a scheduler, FileZilla is an excellent open source FTP client. It's stable, fast and very efficient. Highly recommended.

First of all, and this may sound cheesy, but I quite like when there's a little introduction to the game, or at least some sort of setting.

Christmas Crisis drops you right in without any explanation as to why you need to replace Santa. There's only a small window to explain the controls. Movements in Christmas Crisis are simple. Use your arrow keys to navigate your sleigh and the space bar to shoot the presents onto houses. On the whole though, they feel a bit clunky, and there's a little delay every time you move the sleigh.

Christmas Crisis is a bit difficult and I couldn't manage to hit all the houses in the first level. Getting used to it doesn't take much though, but the increase of planes flying around as you pass levels does make it challenging. Even though the game lacks an introduction, and controls are clunky, Christmas Crisis is an OK time waster for the holidays.

For me, the feature which best sums up the PlayStation's impressive multimedia capabilities is its membership of the DLNA (Digital Living Network Alliance). This means that the PS3 can communicate and share content with a large number of other networked devices. And although Apple aren't members of the DLNA, several companies have been working to enable streaming of multimedia content from Macs to the PS3.

Nullriver's MediaLink is the newest kid on the block. MediaLink works in a similar way to its competitors, acting as a file server which allows you to stream multimedia files, including your iTunes and iPhoto libraries across your home network. Your PS3 detects the server, connects and the shared content shows up in the XMB (PS3 menu). When compared with its competitors, notably Elgato's EyeConnect, MediaLink performs very well.

I experienced no cuts in transmission or delays, and I was impressed to see better handling of iTunes artwork as well as video previews. Some DivX files which worked with other media servers weren't detected by MediaLink, which was disappointing. I think this was due to the files having the '.divx' format and I expect that this issue will fixed in time.

That said, video playback generally works without issues, though image quality was not always as good as when using EyeConnect. Browsing photo and music libraries is a breeze with MediaLink, though there are some interesting differences with competitors in the way that it presents the iTunes library.

I noticed that EyeConnect always displays the iTunes library exactly as iTunes would (select an artist, then an album and you'll see tracks by that artist which feature on that album), while MediaLink seems to use a different indexing system (select an artist and then an album and you'll see all the tracks on that album, irrespective of artist) - this suggests that MediaLink is building its own index of files rather than relying on your iTunes library file. MediaLink is a robust, reliable media server option for sharing content from your Mac to your PS3, and compares well to other apps in its class.

SlenderMod follows the same principle as Slender - you have to collect 8 creepy pages saying things "He watches you" and "Help!" before the tall scary freak that is Slenderman can mash-up your brain by suddenly appearing out of nowhere and telepathically incapacitating you.

The controls are simple: Movement: WASD Orientation: Mouse Pickup Notes: Left Mouse Button Sprint: Shift SlenderMod feels a little larger than Slender probably because there are a few more scenarios like railroads, playgerounds and a few other buildings thrown in. It also does a good job of making Slender slightly scarier which is more than can be said for most attempted remakes.

However, it would still be nice to see a Slender remake that innovates a little bit more on the Slender concept. If Slender scared you, then you'll probably find SlenderMod even scarier. Borderlands 2 is a first person shooter with RPG leveling. It's distinctive with it's cell-shaded graphics, over the top weaponry and characters. We saw a demo of early Borderlands 2 gameplay where the player begins in a cold wasteland, and quickly comes across some ice-dwelling monsters. These showed off the improved enemy AI in the game: using their environments intelligently, enemies don’t simply attack, but will find objects to throw at you too and try to stay on higher ground.

With humanoid enemies, this increased intelligence is even more pronounced - they work in teams to out-flank you, retreat when wounded and more. All the battles in Borderlands 2 were reassuringly dynamic and dramatic, without feeling scripted. The range of weaponry is really varied, with the new use-once-and-throwaway-guns called Tediores looking really cool - they have ammunition in them, but you can also throw them as grenades, making them very flexible. The mission demoed saw you teaming up with a female siren in two player co-op mode, to rescue Roland, a character from the first game.

He has been captured by a large hovering robot, hiding out in a lair guarded by weaponized mining robots. Fighting through these as Roland is being taken away through the industrial complex, we saw enemy backup robots being fired in from a moon base, which looked really cool and emphasized the incredible scale.

The moonbase can attack anywhere on the planet of Pandora, run by 'Handsome Jack', who is trying to violently bring law and order. There was plenty of macabre, violent humor along the way, and the demo finished with the start of what looked like a big boss battle. The player was flung off a high damn structure by an enormous robot.

Views from here, when there was time to look, were really impressive, and the huge landscape we could see is apparently all explorable in Borderlands 2. Developers Gearbox were keen to make the point that they feel many game sequels are just 'content dumps', additional levels with no substantive changes, so they want to make Borderlands 2 a genuinely new game with real changes, and from what I saw, they are well on the way to achieving that.

Although many Microsoft products don't successfully translate onto Mac, Microsoft Office 2008 is certainly an exception.

If you've got Expat Shield installed, you'll also need to remove that first before installing. Also, surfing with Hotspot Shield is noticeably slower than normal but it's fine for streaming video from video sites such as Hulu. Hotspot Shield for Mac now includes malware protection meaning that while using it, you shouldn't get infected by anything that may damage your system. Hotspot Shield for Mac is an easy to install and use way of accessing sites that are blocked in your region.

You area also equipped with grenades and a spade for digging. You can talk to your team mates in secret to coordinate tactics. Despite the simplistic shooting and graphics, the gameplay is really satisfying. Digging and building adds an interesting dynamic to the game, and some of the servers have really well-designed levels to battle over. Getting started Ace of Spades does have its problems.

Changing your player name is awkward, and battles can seemingly go on without end. However, these issues will no doubt be ironed out as the game develops. Where Ace of Spades isn't very user friendly, there is at least an extensive Wiki where you can find answers, as well as the newbie guide. Ace of Spades is a fun release in what is becoming 'the Minecraft genre'.

Lastly, the total lack of conversion configuration will leave more advanced users cold, and really makes Smart Converter feel too basic. Try Media Converter for a better simple app, or iFFmpeg for a more advanced and complete conversion app. Smart Converter is extremely easy to use, but it's not always successful, can be slow and has no options for power users.
