iPhoto is Apple's flagship application for managing and viewing photos on your Mac. The interface is very slick and iPhoto features tons of tools to help you manage your library. In fact, the real strength of the program resides in the organizing options such as organizing by events, create a gallery, print out calendars and books etc.

In particular, the unified search function allows you to quickly find any photo based on all sorts of criteria like date, name or keywords and now, even faces. One of my favorite features of iPhoto are the photo montages which allow you to select a style of presentation with accompanying music.

These look great and are a nice way to view your photos and reminisce on the past. However, I dislike the way iPhoto has to build a library file of your photos. If you've already got several GB of photos on your system, you don't want another huge iPhoto file taking up space on your hard drive. Of course, iPhoto is also very well integrated into other Apple apps such as iDVD so your iPhoto images can easily be used in videos that you're editing.

Displaying photos in full screen mode isn't as simple as it should be however - it involved way too many clicks and its hard to get rid of the toolbar. Overall, iPhoto is an extremely elegant photo application which makes viewing photos a pleasure.

This includes everything from dialing a phone number to interacting with iTunes or image and text manipulation. This means you can really customize the application to work according to your needs. The only downside is the stability issues that Quicksilver seems to have. The application is noted to crash every once in a while. Despite this stability issue, Quicksilver remains an incredibly intuitive and powerful multi-application launcher for Mac.

Recommended for productivity geeks.

Visual Tabs and Tab Stacking is useful if you often have too many open, and there are now visual mouse gestures. These are well implemented, and accessed by holding the right mouse button which brings up a translucent guide to mouse gestures. This is a great introduction for people who've never used gestures, and hopefully allows for greater use in the future. There's still an integrated mail client, which continues Opera 11's move towards doing everything you need in one application.

The newest improvements and features of note in 11.50 are Speed Dial and Password Syncing. The most notable improvement has been to Speed Dial which instead of simply giving easy access to your favorite sites, now allows you to embed your Speed Dial with dynamic information - in other words, web apps within Opera.

Meanwhile Password Syncing allows you to sync passwords across machines and devices - just sign-up for an account and Opera does the rest. There have also been some HTML5 improvements for developers such as Session History, Navigation and the W3C File API. Opera 11.50 is a definite improvement on Opera 11.10 although the changes aren't revolutionary.

However, if you're looking for a new browser, this is probably the most innovative currently on the market and is well worth installing.

There's also a an online multiplayer mode. A steering wheel would help you get a lot more out of the game and the keyboard controls aren't great in Colin McRae: DiRT 2 but overall, it's an excellent racing game for Macs.

One thing's for sure: there's nothing easier than deleting an application on a Mac. Drag and drop it on your Trash icon and it's gone. Or is it really? Actually by doing that you omit to erase certificates and other preference files associated with the program. A number of developers have picked up on this issue (it's odd that Apple hasn't) and created applications that will fully delete all files associate with a program.

AppDelete is such an app and a very good one at that too. Once AppDelete is installed, all you need to do is drag the program you want to remove onto its icon. Alternatively, you can selects Apps in the top right corner and AppDelete will reveal a list of Applications installed on your system.

The search is very quick and takes just a few seconds. Immediately, AppDelete will reveal the associated files that need deleting with the applications. These are normally receipts and library preference files. You can uncheck the ones you want to keep in the AppDelete window or remove them all.

AppDelete also lets you keep a log of what you are removing. Its a good idea to save this file as you can use it for future reference in case of system problems and it turns out you've accidentally deleted an important file. There is an Undo feature in AppDelete too but it seems this only rolls back the last change that you made, not successive ones before that. My favorite feature in AppDelete was Orphans.

Orphans searches for files that are not associated with any applications anymore and have probably been left behind. I discovered a huge number of files using this that AppCleaner had obviously left behind. The only criticism I have is that there is no way to Select All which, if you're dealing with hundreds of files left behind, takes a long time to select them all.

Cleaning though takes a matter of seconds. Note that this trial is limited to a few uses after which you have to pay to upgrade to the full version. However, even if you don't choose to use it regularly, its very useful for removing orphan files as this can be done within the trial limit. Many users also report the developer is extremely helpful and responsive in case of problems. AppDelete does a great job of removing files left behind when applications uninstall but beware that you may experience some problems with it when you restart your Mac.

If you ask about a photo editor for Mac, most people will recommend iPhoto. But if you're looking for something else, you should probably skip to Aperture. Aperture could be defined as 'iPhoto on steroids'. It's a complete photo organizer and viewer, easy enough for the amateur, but with the powerful tools that any advanced user would need.

When I said Aperture was a bit like iPhoto, I wasn't exaggerating.

This new version includes Faces, the popular facial recognition technology implemented in the last version of iPhoto. But Aperture goes a step beyond and also includes Places, another special technology that geolocates your images using the information stored in metadata by some cameras. However, I have to say that this feature wasn't working properly: the map took ages to load and controls were over-sensitive – which made map navigation a real pain.

It even caused a program crash while testing it. Besides these organizational features, Aperture includes a bunch of interesting tools to enhance your pics. You can tweak the image's balance, exposure, color and light values, levels and more with easy-to-use slides. The so-called Adjustment presets let you apply quick, frequent fixes to images in just two clicks.

Finally, the all-new precision brushes help you fix the problem with extraordinary accuracy. Other features in Aperture I found specially interesting were the possibility to share your images online in MobileMe, Facebook and Flickr right from the program, and to create printed copies of your photos – which always works as a nice present for grandma. Aperture is an excellent photo application, there's no doubt about that.

But in a way I felt disappointed when testing this new version. I expected to have more editing and drawing tools, and – why not – support for layers and masks. I found the controls uncomfortable and hard to manage, and my overall impression was one of disappointment. Aperture is a powerful photo organizer and viewer that includes a handful of features to view, fix, optimize, enhance, share and enjoy your photos!

Everybody knows that MSN Messenger on Mac is never as polished as it is on the PC. A good html editor is essential if you want to get some coding done or work on a website. Taco HTML Edit lets you edit both HTML and PHP in a simple and tabbed interface. Taco lets you quickly insert specific characters and create clips of code. You can also add any link, image, list or table. The tree view on the left always gives you an idea of which document you are working on. The difference between Preview and Live Preview isn't clear at first, but actually the first one will open up your default browser while the second will show the result in a pane at the bottom half of the interface. I enjoyed working with tabs and the Batch find tool to look for specific code.

The code completion tool is also really handy, helping you out. I did find Taco HTML Edit somewhat sluggish at times, especially when working with multiple times. Although it can be a little slow, Taco HTML Edit is a good html and php editor with some useful tools and a good multi-pane interface.

If you want to create a website but don't have any web designing experience, then Sandvox may be your answer. Sandvox uses a WYSIWYG style interface that allows you to drag and drop elements into the site and there are more than 40 original and diverse designs to choose from. Although Sandvox will feel a little childish for a professional web designer, there is a surprising number of advanced features under the hood which make it suitable for all levels.

For instance, you can edit raw HTML to fine-tune the site to your liking and the Professional edition also lets you add e-commerce elements, Flash and Google Webmaster tools. The designs are a bit limiting but, as mentioned above, you can change them to a large extent by recoding the HTML. Alternatively, you can purchase some third-party designs.

However, the biggest drawback of Sandvox is when it comes to publishing to the web. It should be easy to connect to an FTP server but unfortunately Sandvox doesn't make it so despite the detailed guide on how to do so. In addition, although the drag and drop interface is very easy to use, it can be very inflexible, pushing elements all over the place and becoming quite frustrating at times. Sandvox is an interesting website designer although its a bit inflexible and doesn't handle FTP connections very well.

Last, but not least, Spotify has launched its MP3 download service, thanks to which you can buy and download individual songs and also your custom playlists. The price depends on the number of songs you want to download – the longer the playlist, the less you pay for each track.

You can pay with credit card or Paypal, though the latter is not accepted if you only purchase one song. Just like a good wine, Spotify gets better with age. If you don’t mind the limitations in the Free version (or you’re willing to pay for the Unlimited/Premium one) it’s probably time to ditch your old desktop music player. Spotify lets you browse, play, share and buy music, including not only your lifelong favorite bands, but also brand new styles and artists.
